Abstract
612,482. Electric cables. SONNENFELD, H. May 25, 1946, No. 15892. [Class 36] [Also in Group XXXVII] An electric cable is constructed in such a manner that the heat generated by the passage of current along the conductor may be converted into useful energy. For this purpose a cooling fluid is allowed to circulate in the cable, either in the hollow core of the conductors, o cooling tubes may be arranged between the conductors in a cable duct. The latter arrangement is shown in Fig. 2, with the cooling tubes 5 arranged between cores 2 within the duct 1. A refrigerant circulates in the pipes 5 and is pumped into compressor 8. Thence it flows to a condenser 10 giving up its heat to liquid 11 for a heating system, and on to expansion valve 9, and back to pipes 5. The operation of the compressor 8 is controlled by the current flowing in the cable, thus ensuring that the cable temperature is kept constant. One method of doing this is shown. The primary of the transformer 12 is traversed by the cable current and the current in the secondary operates the core of the solenoid 14 which varies the rheostat 19 via the cam 16. The rheostat 19 is in the field circuit of a motor 20 driving the compressor 8. A heat storage system is incorporated to ensure that the heat circulating by means of the medium 11 does not vary unduly during peak loading periods of the cable.
