Abstract
A process for removing oxide from the surfaces of metals and alloys which are resistant to fused caustic alkali (e.g. the ferrous metals, copper, and their alloys), comprises subjecting the oxide coating to the action of a fused bath of caustic alkali containing 1-20 per cent of an oxidizing agent stable therewith, at between 300 DEG C. and 600 DEG C. for not less than 1 minute (without the application of an externally generated electric current) and then subjecting it to the action of a weak aqueous inorganic acid having no oxidizing effect on the metal e.g. dilute hydrochloric, sulphuric or nitric acids. The oxidizing agent may be one or more of the alkali metal or alkali earth nitrates, chlorates, peroxides, dichromates, manganates or permanganates, those preferred being sodium nitrate or chlorate, or potassium chlorate, and the preferred amount thereof being 5-15 per cent. The process may be applied a second time to a metal oxidized during an annealing process, and is said to be particularly suitable for removing oxide from the surfaces of iron, nickel and cobalt and their alloys with each other and with chromium, manganese, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium and copper. Specification 466,661 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 464,982.
