Abstract
612,012. Heating and cooling gases by direct contact. WHELLER, H. S. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26321. [Class 64(i)] A mixing chamber for use in a heating or cooling device which receives two separate streams of a fluid such as air and discharges the said streams as a single stream comprises spaced plates forming spaced passages for the streams, said passages being narrow relative to their length and being open-ended to provide an inlet to and an outlet from the passages, spaced walls connecting adjacent pairs of plate to close off access of one of the streams to alternate passages, and spaced walls connecting adjacent pairs of plates to close off access of the other stream to the remaining passages, the outlets to all said passages being arranged side by side. Two streams of air at different temperatures are mixed so as to give a uniformly heated conjoint stream by passing the streams through spaced plates 80 forming openended passages the upper edges of the plates being closed by walls 88 which cause the upper stream to flow through the passages 90 between alternate plates but preclude access of the lower stream while the lower edges are closed by walls 86 which direct the lower streams of air 74 through passages 82 alternate to the passages 90 and preclude the lower stream from passing through the passages 90. The device is shown in Fig. 1 in conjunction with a conduit 22 constructed to divide a stream of air driven by a fan 12 into two streams of proportions determined by the position of an adjustable damper 20, the upper stream passing unheated through the upper compartment of a sectional unit 14 while the lower stream in passing through the lower compartment 32 of the unit is heated by passage over steamheated finned tubes 33. The two streams are then mixed by passage through the unit formed by the spaced plates 80 the apices of which are mounted so as to meet the dividing line of the compartments 14, 32. The air mixing chamber may also be used to mix cold air with warmer indoor air before it is circulated through a heater, to prevent accidental freezing of the latter. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown), a mixing chamber having square baffle plates is used to mix outdoor air and indoor air in proportions regulated by thermostatically controlled dampers before passage to heater.
