Abstract

<PICT:0611644/III/1> <PICT:0611644/III/2> <PICT:0611644/III/3> <PICT:0611644/III/4> Travelling materials are sprayed by an apparatus wherein a liquid sprayer is arranged to be reciprocated across the path of travel of the materials and wherein means are provided for controlling the rate of flow from the sprayer in accordance with the instantaneous speed thereof so as to give a substantially uniform delivery of spray over the whole width of the materials. A wire mesh conveyer 1 running over idler roller 2 is driven by roller 3 and motor 4. The conveyer passes through a spray cabinet 7 and a heating cabinet 8. Trough 10 running below the conveyer communicates with exhaust duct 12 through apertures 11. Spray guns 15 are pivotally mounted on brackets 14 slidably mounted on two pairs of parallel guides 13. Each gun 15 has a control valve trigger with arms 17 carrying roller 18 co-operating with fixed cam 19. A crank-pin 20 on disc pulley 21 mounted on countershaft 6 is linked by rod 22 to lever 23 pivotally mounted at 24 to form a four-bar linkage. Cross-piece 25 on lever 23 moves over arcuate guide 26 so as to guide lever 23 in its oscillation. Endless belt 27 is connected to cross-piece 25 and to spray gun brackets 14 and runs around four guide rollers 28. Distributer head 29 is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis in ball bearing 30. The flexible pipes 31, 32 supply compressed air and finishing liquid respectively to the distributer head 29 and hence via flexible pipes 33, 33a to the guns 15. The conveyer feeds skins slowly through spray and drying cabinets. The rotary motion of pin 21 is transformed by the four-bar linkage into simple harmonic motion of lever 23 which is transmitted by belt 27 to spray guns 15 to reciprocate them across the direction of motion of conveyer. The rollers 18 ride up and down on the cam surface rising in the middle and falling at the end of the stroke. The valve actuated by each trigger arm 17 is thus opened most widely at the middle of the stroke and momentarily closed at the end of each stroke. Fig. 5 shows a modification in which the fixed cam is replaced by an adjustable cam 19a in the form of an eccentrically turned rod which may be rotated to vary the lift which it exerts on cam follower roller 18. The position of the cam may be adjusted by means of hand wheel 34.ALSO:<PICT:0611644/IV (c)/1> <PICT:0611644/IV (c)/2> <PICT:0611644/IV (c)/3> <PICT:0611644/IV (c)/4> Travelling materials are sprayed by an apparatus wherein a liquid sprayer is arranged to be reciprocated across the path of travel of the materials and wherein means are provided for controlling the rate of flow from the sprayer in accordance with the instantaneous speed thereof so as to give a substantially uniform delivery of a spray on the whole width of the material. Referring to the drawing, wire mesh conveyed 1 running over idler roller 2 is driven by roller 3 and motor 4. The conveyer passes through a spray cabinet 7 and a heating cabinet 8. Trough 10, running below conveyer communicates with exhaust duct 12 through holes 11. Cross-piece 25 on lever 23 moves over acuate guide 26 so as to guide lever 23 in its oscillation. Endless belt 27 is connected to cross-piece 25 and to spray gun brackets 14 and runs around four guide rollers 28. Distributor head 29 is mounted to rotate about a vertical axis in ball-bearing 30. The flexible pipes 31, 32 supply compressed air and finishing liquid respectively to the distributor head 29 and hence via flexible pipes 33, 33a to the guns 15. The conveyer feeds skins slowly through spray and drying cabinets. The rotary motion of pin 21 is transformed by the four-bar linkage into single harmonic motion of lever 23 which is transmitted by belt 27 to spray guns 15 to reciprocate them across the direction of motion of conveyer. The rollers 18 ride up and down the cam surface, rising in the middle and falling at the end of the stroke. The position of the cam may be adjusted by means of hand-wheel 34.
