Abstract
Thermoplastic compositions are made by homogeneously compounding a bituminous material and a copolymer of intrinsic viscosity above 0.5 of an aliphatic mono-olefine and an aromatic mono-olefine, the aromatic mono-olefine content of the copolymer being from 20-80 per cent, prepared at a temperature below - 50 DEG C. in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst. The preferred aliphatic mono-olefine is isobutylene, others specified are isopentene and a pentene obtained by dehydration of sec.-amyl alcohol. Styrene is the preferred aromatic mono-olefine, others are indene, methyl styrenes and dihydro-naphthalene. Listed bituminous materials include natural and petroleum asphalts, cracking coil tars, coal tar, wood tar and pitches. Asphalts which have been refined, e.g. by distillation, steam reduction, air blown and oxidized, may also be used. If desired, the bituminous material may be dissolved in kerosene, toluene, aromatic petroleum solvents, benzene, petroline or in aqueous emulsion. The composition may also include polymeric materials not normally compatible with asphalt, e.g. polyisobutylene, polymethyl and polylauryl methacrylates. Optional additions include clay, sand, limestone dust, limestone or coarser mineral aggregates, asbestos, hair, cotton and linseed oil. The addition of the copolymer to bituminous material improves its toughness, flexibility, oxidation resistance, low temperature flexibility and reduces the cold flow. The compositions may be calendered, extruded or cast or used for weather-resisting coating compositions, being applied in solution in a volatile solvent or in a heat-softened condition and, if desired, covered with roofing grit. They may be used for water-proofing concrete, e.g. building foundations, paving roads, caulking purposes, e.g. building joints and expansion joints in concrete surfaces, for water-proofing single sheets of paper, bonding sheets of paper together or for bonding paper to metal foils, e.g. aluminium foil (see Group VIII). Insulating material, e.g. rock and glass wool, may be bonded to craft paper with the compositions. They may also be used for lining storage battery containers and for the preparation of printing inks. Specification 513,521 is referred to.
