Abstract
A heat resisting machinable alloy, wholly or mainly of the ferritic type having a strongly reduced disposition for grain increase at high temperature, contains 10-40 per cent of chromium, 0.2-2.5 silicon, optionally 0.1-9 per cent of aluminium, with or without one or both of nickel and cobalt and the remainder iron in an amount not less than 49 per cent, the alloy being characterized by a content of fine particles of oxides of strong oxide forming metals in amount between 0.05 and 10 per cent or fine particles of carbides in amount between 0.20 and 10 per cent or oxides and carbides together in amount between 0.1 and 10 per cent. The oxides used may be those of lithium, beryllium, magnesium, calcium, titanium, vanadium, strontium, zirconium, barium, cerium, tantalum or thorium. The carbides used may be those of titanium, vanadium, zirconium, molybdenum, niobium, hafmum, tungsten, tantalum or thorium. The said fine particles may be added in a ready-prepared condition and finely powdered, to the molten alloy or mixed with the alloy in a powder metallurgical process. Alternatively the basic constituents of the fine particles may be added to an alloy melt in stoichiometric proportions. Thus oxygen may be added to a melt containing a strong oxide forming element or the addition of oxygen may be followed by addition of the strong oxide forming element. Oxygen may be added by using a slag rich in oxygen, by blowing in oxygen or by giving the oxygen-containing atmosphere surrounding the melt a higher pressure. The alloys may be used in the form of rod, bar, strip or wire or in the form of details of furnaces, machines or apparatus working at high temperatures.
