Abstract

An apparatus for chromatographically separating substances from one another comprises a container, a material in the container which is chromatographically active with respect to at least one of the substances, and means for mechanically segregating a region of the material from the remainder thereof. An apparatus intended for radial chromatography (Fig. 2) comprises a chamber 7 filled with chromatographically active material, an annular portion 10 thereof in which the <PICT:0611080/III/1> <PICT:0611080/III/2> recovered concentrates being separated from the remainder by two coaxial cylindrical perforated walls 11 and 12 interconnected by a removable bottom 13 and a removable lid 23. The bottom 13 stands on a support 14 carried by jacks 15. The material is recovered by unlocking the lid 23 and raising the jacks 15, whereby the chamber containing the annular portion 10 is raised to a position above the chamber 7 where it can be replaced by another charged chamber. A plurality of such removable annular portions may be provided. According to a modification (Fig. 9, not shown), the perforated walls are attached to the walls of the support, but are not connected to the bottom. On raising the jack, the material in the annular zone is isolated by the walls of the support and is eluted, the elutant being drawn off by a tap provided in the bottom. Alternatively (Fig. 5, not shown), this embodiment may be modified by resting a second annular chamber, the walls of which have sharpened upper edges, below the first chamber on a support carried by a second jack. On raising the second jack, the sharpened edges cut through the material in the first annular chamber and the first jack is then operated as before. According to another modification, Fig. 11, chambers 61, 62, 63 and 64 carrying the chromatographic material are laterally removable into staggered relationship on horizontal rail guides for replacement by stand-by chambers 611, 621, 631 and 641. The apparatus may be charged with a material carrying a chromatographically active liquid on only a part thereof. Specification 585,224 is referred to.
