Abstract
Aminotriazine formaldehyde condensation products containing the maximum number of methylol groups at least the greater part of which are etherified are prepared by treating a condensation product containing the maximum number of methylol groups, or a mixture of the components forming such a product with a low boiling aliphatic monohydric alcohol at a temperature above 50 DEG C. in the presence of an excess of formaldehyde over the quantity required for maximum methylolisation and with the aid of less than 1/10 mol. of acid/mol. of aminotriazine. The solution of the ether is neutralised and excess alcohol and water removed by distillation. Salts formed by neutralisation may be separated by filtration. In examples (1) melamine is heated with neutralised formaldehyde solution and water removed by distillation to leave hexamethylol melamine with excess formaldehyde as a salve-like mass. Acidified methyl alcohol is added and the moisture refluxed. Reaction is stopped by neutralisation and excess alcohol and water are removed by distillation. The hot solution is filtered. The syrupy product is soluble in cold water but separates from hot water. It is also soluble in benzene and alcohol. In example (2), is similar.
