[Class 39 (iii)] A furnace of the submerged resistor type described in the Parent Specification is operated so as to maintain a relationship between current, current density, and cross sectional area of the melting channels to produce electro-magnetic pressure gradients of a magnitude defined by j<2> x D not less than 1.3 x 10<6> in the connecting channels and j<3> x D not greater than 1.3 x 10<@5> in the bottom channel, where j equals current density and D equals diameter of channel. Specification 506,980 and U.S.A. Specification 1,201,671 are referred to.
