610,777. Copying and carving stone. JAQUES, J. M., and GILDERSLEVE, C. April 16, 1946, No. 11679. [Classes 124 and 145 (i)] A multiple carving machine comprises a series of rotatable cutters or carving tools 4, and a tracing stylus 8, mounted on a fixed support, and a work-piece carrier 18 rotatably mounted on supporting means adjustable for moving the carrier 18 relatively to the cutters into and out of carving position, and to permit the carrier to be rotated to present either of oppositely disposed faces of the work-pieces b to the cutters for carving. Work-pieces b and a pattern a are carried by holders 21, mounted on the carrier 18 which is rotatably mounted in arms 15 by stub shafts 19, which allow the carrier 18 to move axially against a spring 20. The arms 15 are pivotally mounted at 16 on side plates 10 pivoted at 11 to uprights 2. The work is brought into the carving position by raising the arms 15 against a spring 17 by means of a handle 30, the side plates 10 being depressed if necessary against a spring 13 and the sliding and pivoting movements of the carrier 18 in the arms 15 allow the cutters to travel over one face of the work under the control of the stylus 8. The carrier 18 may now be rotated in the arms 15 through 180 degrees to bring the opposite faces of the work-pieces into the carving position. The work holders are rotatably mounted in the carrier 18, and after a pair of opposite sides have been carved as described above, the holders are turned through 90 degrees and the carving operations repeated.
