Abstract
610,523. Making chains. MILLER, R. S. Aug. 9, 1945, No. 20414. Convention date, Nov. 22, 1941. [Clasaes 83 (i), 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion ; casting.-A chain link, preferably for anchor or other heavy-duty chains of high tensile strength, comprises a steel bar with ends doubled back and spaced from the intermediate portion, the space between the ends being filled with a deposit of weld metal fused with and homogeneously united to the ends. The blank may be cut obliquely from a round bar or be formed with bevelled ends 44. It is then heated and bent over a mandrel recessed to receive an interconnected link and the space between the ends is enclosed in grooves 25, 26 in a two-part mould 21, 22 having inclined walls 27, 28. Flux is inserted into the mould and welding effected by an are-welding rod 29. In making stud chain links, a stud 36 is inserted prior to effecting the weld which is thus effected between an end of the stud and both ends of the link, the mould being grooved at its lower end to receive the stud. The other end of the stud may be welded to the link at 42. U.S.A. Specification 2,348,087 is referred to.
