Abstract
610,494. Moulders' cores. WHEELER, M. A. April 8, 1946, No. 10804. [Class 83 (i)] To overcome the cracking of castings due to their contraction around the cores used, a hollow metal core 6 is employed, the material and wall thickness of which is chosen to retain its strength until the casting solidifies and then deform plastically as the casting cools down to the point at which the core may be removed. The core 6 is chilled locally by a block 7 held in place by a spring 8 or other means which will permit the block 7 to move inward as the casting contracts. The core may be cooled in the initial stages by passing air or other fluid through it. For alloys which melt at very high temperatures, between 900‹ C. and 1500‹ C., mild steel is a suitable core material, for lower melting points copper cores may be used.
