[Class 142(iv)] [Also in Group VII] A method of manufacturing a pile fabric consists in producing a pile 1 by sewing or embroidering the pile material into or through a foundation 10 composed of plastic or plastic-treated material, the pile being fixed in the foundation by heating or otherwise treating the foundation to cause the plastic to close the holes produced in the foundation by the needles used to introduce the pile material. The foundation may be provided on one of each face thereof with a temporary pile-supporting layer of even or uneven thickness before the pile is produced, the temporary layer or layers being subsequently removed. In another modification, a temporary pile-supporting layer is placed between two foundation sheets and the pile produced is cut medially thereof. The foundation may be a plasticised vinyl sheet which, after the sewing or like operation, is treated with a solvent plasticiser, a sheet of unvulcanised rubber which is subsequently vulcanised, or a sheet of alginate treated with plastic, the alginate being ultimately removed.
