Abstract

609,715. Automatic pressure control systems. MINNEAPOLIS - HONEYWELL REGULATOR CO. Dec. 21, 1944, No. 25653. Convention date, Feb. 22, 1943. [Class 38 (iv)] The turbine driving a compressor feeding air to an internal-combustion engine is controlled in dependence on the acceleration of the turbine and the pressure of the air delivered. In the form shown, the proportion of the air from exhaust manifold 25 of engine 10 fed to the turbine 27 driving compressor 12 depends on gate 31 adjusted through gear 38 by motor 36 having its field windings 40, 41 controlled by a bridge network containing four variable resistances 73, 76, 78 and 87, the first being manually controlled. Arm 80 of resistance 78 is controlled by the pressure of the air fed from compressor 12 through cooler 14 to the carburetter 16 while arm 75 on resistance 76 varies with rate of change of pressure at the exhaust manifold 25, since the bellows 106 is connected thereto through a needle valve while rheostat 87 readjusts the bridge when the gate 31 is moved. In a modification, the rheostat is omitted and the bellows controlling the slider thereof are replaced by a switch which short-circuits part of resistance 78 and thereby slows down the turbine when the speed or acceleration of the latter exceeds a predetermined value. Specifications 605,449 and 605,450 are referred to.
