Abstract
609,683. Welding; broaching. DUNTON, C. E., GORDON, S. H., LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD, and RESISTANCE WELDERS, Ltd. March 20, 1946, No. 8673. [Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Broaches.-Apparatus for removing weld upset from the welded joints of rails comprises a traversed tool-box support-- ing planing-tools and guide members which bear upon one only of the lengths of rail united by the weld. At the delivery end of an electric resistance welding-machine 21 is supported a frame 20 in which slides on rollers 23 a cross head 24 reciprocated by hydraulic cylinders 22, 31. The crosshead carries a split tool box 33, 33, the halves of which are adjusted by screwed shafts 38, 39 geared by a chain 44 and rotated by an electromotor. The parts 33 carry staggered cutters 52, 53, 54, 55, 56 shaped to the rail section and guides 57, 58, 59, 61, 62 which contact the rail surfaces on one side of the joint. The tool box floats in the horizontal direction by shafts 39, 38, sliding in bearings 48, 49 and in the vertical direction by nuts 42, 43 sliding in the box parts 33. In operation, the welded rail is threaded through the tool-box, the guides adjusted by hand-wheels 66 and the tool box closed by rotation of the shafts 38, 39. Actuation of cylinder 23 traverses the tool-box to remove the upset. The cylinder 31 returns the crosshead. The rail may be moved through a stationary tool-box.
