Abstract

608,950. Automatic control for furnaces. NORTON CO. May 1, 1945, No. 11021. Convention date, May 8, 1944. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XII] Current.-In an electric furnace (see Group XII), the three electrodes are individually raised or lowered automatically relatively to the mass of fused material on the furnace heath, accordingly as the current flowing to the electrode rises or falls. As shown, the electrodes 13-15 are carried on vertically adjustable posts 19-21, the adjustment being effected by units 125a-c, each comprising a winch driven by a reversible motor. The power supply 115-117 is connected through step-down transformers H1-3, L1-3 to conductors 122-124 and the electrodes. Each conductor 122-124 is provided with a suitable low resistance or preferably with a transformer 130a-c having its primary winding in the conductor and its secondary winding connected to a coil 126a-c. Current changes in the conductors thus actuate spring-biassed armatures 132a-c either to close contacts 134a-c or contacts 135a-c, causing rotation of the motors in the units 125a-c either in one direction or the other. The rates of current flow are determined by the setting of the manual controls 120a-c and the electrodes may be raised or lowered by the manipulation of the levers 129a-c.
