Abstract
608,331. Locating leaks in pipes. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and DAUNCEY, L. A. Feb. 20, 1946, No. 5299. [Class 99 (ii)] A leak in a pipe line or fluid-filled electric cable is located by isolating a faulty section, filling the section with a fluid A at a given pressure, supplying a fluid B to one end of the section at a measured rate to maintain said pressure, the fluids A and B having different rates of discharge at a given pressure, and determining the position of the leak by a calculation based on the quantity of fluid B supplied before a change takes place in its rate of supply. Hydrogen is supplied as fluid B to a cable normally filled with nitrogen. Branches 6, 7 supply hydrogen and nitrogen alternatively through a filter and gas-drier 16, reducing valve 18, gauges 17, 19 and a flowmeter 20. The meter may be byepassed, and valves 22, 24 are provided so that the apparatus may be filled with hydrogen before beginning the timed supply thereof. A check test may be made from the other end of the section.
