607,074. Seaming non-metallic sheet materials. GREGORY'S OF LIVERPOOL, Ltd., and DAVIES, K. K. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2447. [Class 42(i)] [Also in Groups XV and XXIII] A hand tool for sealing together pieces of sheet material, e.g. bags or like containers provided with a coating of adhesive on the inner side of their open edges, consists of two relatively movable jaw elements, a roller rotatably supported about an axis substantially fixed relative to one jaw element and a second roller rotatably supported about an axis on the other jaw element so as to have a limited degree of freedom relative to the axis. The hollow roller 13 is mounted on a pin, fixed to the jaw 11. by bearing means near opposite ends of the roller and the hollow roller 17 is mounted on a pin., fixed to the jaw 15, by a single centrally placed bearing means. The jaw 15 is pivotally attached to a handle 10 by a pin 9 and the jaws are normally urged apart by a spring 19 and are urged together by a toggle lever system 20, 21 engaging the end ot an adjustable screw 22. The rollers may be provided with knurled ribs 13a, 17a staggered relative to each other. The rollers may be heated by means of electrical resistance elements disposed in each roller, the control means being connected to the operating means for the jaws, or the rollers may be used for cold sealing materials coated with a pressure sensitive adhesive such as a high melting point asphalt, partially plasticized and having a softening point of approximately 180‹F.-200‹F.
