Abstract
606,418. Aerating liquids. ACTIVATED SLUDGE, Ltd., and COOMBS, E. P. July 25, 1944, Nos. 14167 and 18997. [Class 14(i)] [Also in Group I] A diffuser for diffusing gases into liquids, for use for example in aerating sewage, comprises a diffuser pipe along which are located a plurality of detachable diffuser elements to form separate chambers, each element having a porous wall and being wholly or partly circular in cross-section, the diffuser pipe having an inlet for gas and oulets leading to the interior of the diffuser chambers. In the construction shown, a sewage treatment tank is provided with a pipe 13 connected at one end to a source of air supply and at the other end to a semi-circular diffuser pipe 15 with a flat face 16. The pipe 15 is connected by pipes 20 and nuts 21 to a series of semicircular porous diffuser elements 17. Each pipe 20 has a port 23 covered by a rubber sleeve 23a which permits air to pass through the port but prevents reverse flow of liquid. Pipes 15 may be connected together by expansion joints, each comprising a part 26 connected by bolts 29 to gland rings 27 with intervening packing 28. The joint may have a connection 26a, Fig. 3, for attachment to a feed pipe. The expansion joints and the elbow joint 13a Fig. 1, may be provided with one or more porous elements 39 of the kind described in Specification 605,046. In a modification the diffuser elements are tubular and surround the diffuser pipe the openings in which may be progressively increased in size or number along the pipe to compensate for reduction in air pressure.
