Abstract
606,278. Rotary meters. MITCHELL, J. H. Dec. 5, 1946, No. 29347/45. [Class 110 (ii)] Movement of the rotor is detected electrically by means of a capacitative device in which periodic changes of capacitance occur at a rate proportional to the speed of the rotor. In one embodiment, Fig. 1, the rotor blades 2 form one plate of a variable condenser, the other plate of which is formed by a fixed plate 8. A voltage is applied to the condenser through a high resistance 10, and the cyclic fluctuations of the voltage across the condenser are applied through a condenser 11 to a frequency-measuring circuit for indicating the rate of flow or an impulse-counting circuit for indicating the volume of flow in a given time, or both. In a modification, the rotor blades are shrouded by a peripheral rim which carries on its outer surface upstanding metallic teeth which act as the rotary elements of the variable condenser. In a further modification, Fig. 3, elements 27 give signals to provide an indication of rate of flow, and a separate single element 28 gives signals to provide an indication of quantity of flow.
