Abstract

606,061. Testing hardness of materials. COLLOIDAL RESEARCH LABORATORIES, Ltd., and BARING, A. E. G. Jan. 9, 1946, No. 829. [Class 106 (ii)] A portable hardness testing machine comprises a vice for holding the work to be tested, i.e. the test piece, the vice being movable as a unit on the machine base so as to be adjustable towards and away from an indentor and a measuring microscope to permit of the test piece, when held in the vice, being brought into and out of the range of the indentor and microscope. As shown in Fig. 1, the machine comprises a base supporting a vice V, a hydraulic system H for applying a load to the indentor I and a microscope M having an objective lens O. The vice V comprises two jaws 1 and 2 mounted on sleeves 3 and 4 respectively. The sleeve 4 is slidable in a bore 5 and the sleeve 3 is slidable in the sleeve 4, both sleeves being coupled together by a pin 9, Figs. 1 and 3. A knob 14 fixed to a screwed spindle 15 controls the movement of the vice V as a whole and a knob 19 attached to a spindle 18 controls movement of the jaw 1 for clamping the test piece. The indentor I and the objective lens O are mounted on a turn-table 30 so that either of them can be brought into the operative lower position. When the test piece has been clamped in the vice V the indentor I is brought to the operating position and by means of the hydraulic device H comprising a bellows 64 and a stirrup piece 66 a load is put on the indentor pyramid 37, said load being indicated on a pressure gauge G connected to the bellows 64. An indent is thus made on the test piece. The objective lens O is then brought into the operative position and by means of the microscope M and the micrometer D the indent is measured and by reference to appropriate tables the hardness number is found. The microscope has a prism 71<1> for moving the image transversely to the field of vision and a prism 72<1> for rotating the image, which prisms are controlled by knobs 53, 54 respectively, Fig. 3. There are provided knob 52 for operating the micrometer D and a collimatorunit 73 for illuminating the image. Specification 499,890 is referred to.
