Abstract
605,794. Protective arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. (General Electric Co.). Jan. 4, 1946, No. 400. [Class 38 (iv)] A substantially uniform voltage gradient along a lightning arrester connected to a hightension terminal of a transformer or the like having a grounded metal casing is obtained, without the use of grading rings, by so proportioning the connector between the terminal and arrester and so positioning the arrester in relation thereto, that additional capacity is introduced between the terminal and some elements of the arrester which compensates for the effects due to the normal capacity to ground of the elements. As shown in Fig. 1 an arrester 16 on a transformer 10 comprises vertical and horizontal portions 18, 26, respectively, and the capacity between the elements of portion 26 and the high-voltage terminal 15 of the transformer is increased by enlarging the surface of the connector 25 between the terminal 15 and portion 26 by a surrounding conductive helix 24. The connector may be an acute angle to portion 26. Fig. 7 shows a construction in which the horizontal portion 37 of an arrester 36, 37 connects directly to the terminal 15.
