Abstract

<PICT:0604567/III/1> <PICT:0604567/III/2> <PICT:0604567/III/3> <PICT:0604567/III/4> An apparatus for coating a series of articles with liquid coating material including evaporating solvent capable of producing explosive gases, comprises means for applying liquid coating to the articles, an electrode, means for setting up an electrostatic field between the articles and electrode, a conveyer for carrying the articles into the field past the electrode and in predetermined spaced relation thereto, and means controlled by the position of one of the articles relative to the electrode before entering the field for rendering the apparatus inoperative when the article upon entering the field would so closely approach the electrode as to induce a spark therebetween. Referring to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows a dipping trough 10 containing coating liquid through which groups of articles 11 are submerged and drawn. The articles may be shell casings carried in groups suspended from a conveyer by hangers 12 and hooks 13. The hangers are carried by bars 14 with ends supported by conveyer chains 15 running in tracks 16. The articles pass from the trough through an electrostatic field comprised by a high voltage electrode in the form of a wire mesh screen 20 surrounded by protective fence 21. The screen is negatively charged through power line 20a from power pack 22 and is suspended by insulators 23 from the tracks 16. These tracks and the other terminal of the pack are earthed. A control member such as a trip bar 25 is fixed across entrance gates 26 of fence 21 and activates switch 28 which is normally closed and opens if an article 11 strikes the bar 25, so breaking the main driving circuit and stopping the apparatus. The switch 28 may be actuated by other known means such as a contact wire or electric eye. Immediately below the articles 11 is an apertured air duct 32 with a blower 33, the apparatus being so arranged as to direct a forced draught of air upwards so removing any accumulation of gases given off by the solvent. Fig. 5 illustrates an arrangement whereby a natural draught is created by passing the articles through a hood 40 open at the bottom and terminating at the top in a restricted passage 41. Specification 570,522, [Group XII], is referred to.
