Abstract
Synthetic rubbers are modified by adding a small proportion of an organic or inorganic acid chloride or anhydride to the rubber in the substantial absence of a solvent for the rubber, heating the mixture and subsequently vulcanizing. The preferred reagents are acetic, butyric, crotonic, camphoric, benzoic, maleic, succinic, phthalic, pyromucic, tetrahydropyromucic, boric, phosphoric and iodic anhydrides; and acetyl, phthalyl, succinyl, oxalyl, and phosphoryl chlorides. The rubbers may be polymerized butadiene, erythrene, piperylene, or dimethylbutadiene; or neoprene; or a copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile, styrene or the ethyl ester of cyanacetic acid. In examples the anhydride or chloride is mixed with the rubber and the mix heated to 120 DEG C. for a period up to 3 hours and then the vulcanizing ingredients comprising sulphur, zinc oxide and an accelerator such as tetramethyl thiuram monosulphide added and the process completed by heating at 135-145 DEG C. for 20 minutes.ALSO:Natural and synthetic rubbers are modified by adding a small proportion of an organic or inorganic acid chloride or anhydride to the rubber in the substantial absence of a solvent for the rubber heating the mixture and subsequently vulcanising. The synthetic rubbers may be polymerized butadiene, erythrene, piperylene, or dimethylbutadiene; or neoprene; or a copolymer of butadiene with acrylonitrile styrene or the ethyl ester of cyanacetic acid. In examples the anhydride or chloride is mixed with the rubber and the mix heated to about 120 DEG C. for a period up to 3 hours and then the vulcanising ingredients comprising sulphur, zinc oxide and an accelerator such as tetramethyl thiuram monosulphide added and the process completed by heating at 135-145 DEG C. for about 20 minutes.
