Abstract
Artificial filaments, threads, fibres, films, tubes and the like are obtained by extruding a solution of polyvinyl chloride prepared according to the method described in Specification 600,490 into an evaporative atmosphere, e.g. a current of heated air, and the so-formed filaments or films are immediately or subsequently stretched. The polyvinyl chloride is preferably employed in a solvent mixture of carbon disulphide and acetone. The materials are stretched by passing them over a heated surface or by passing them through, for example, water, oil, air or steam at a raised temperature, and although stretching may be effected in the presence of a swelling agent it is preferably effected in the absence thereof. When appropriate, wetting agents, anti-electrifying agents, lubricants or dyes may be added to the fluid in which the materials are stretched. The acetone present in the spinning solution may contain small quantities of water. In the examples: (1) a carbon disulphide-acetone solution of polyvinyl chloride at 70 DEG C. is extruded into a spinning cell containing air at 125 DEG C., and the so-formed filaments are wound up, subsequently twisted into thread and stretched in water at 95 DEG C.; (2) the spinning solution of example 1 contains a small amount of 1.4.5.8.tetramino anthraquinone; (3) the spinning solution of example 1 contains small amounts of titanium oxide and ethanolamine alkyl naphthalene sulphonate and the filaments produced therefrom are immediately stretched in water at 95 DEG C. and then crimped and stapled.
