Abstract
603,643. Mounting engines. JULIEN, M. F. A. Aug. 3, 1945, No. 20064. Convention date, Nov. 16, 1943. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVI and XXXII] The engine-gear box unit is mounted in a vehicle chassis frame by a single elastic support located substantially at its centre of gravity, such support permitting angular displacements of the engine about its centre of gravity in all directions, but resisting lateral displacements. Additional supports may be provided, preferably along one of the axes of inertia. The invention is particularly suitable for the mounting of flat twin cylinder engines. Fig. 2 shows such an engine having a crank case 1, horizontally opposed cylinders 2, 3, differential 9 with laterally extending driving shafts, and gear box 8. The centre of gravity of the power unit is at G and the main engine support is provided by an elastic member 13 carried between a pair of cheeks 21 depending from the tubular frame cross-member 23. An additional support is provided at 30. If the drive is taken from the rear end of the gear box, the support 30 is replaced by two supports 30a, 30b, Fig. 11, carried by the longitudinal frame members 25. The support 13 may comprise an annular elastic member 14, Fig. 3, disposed between two sleeves 15, 16, and to increase its resilience to angular movements in the plane of the pin 23, annular grooves 17 may be provided in the end faces of the elastic member. Alternatively, in the form shown in Fig. 5, the annular elastic member is in two halves 18 pre-stressed in the direction of the arrows f, the two inner sleeves 16 being held together by a tubular member 19 whose ends are turned over to embrace the sleeves 16 ; the sides of the annular elastic member 18 contact the cheeks 21 so that displacement meets with a progressively increasing resistance. In a further modification, Fig. 6, the support may comprise a spherical centre 16, resilient member 14 and correspondingly shaped outer member 15 ; or in a further modification (not shown) a similar effect is obtained by placing together a pair of conically shaped elements. The additional support 30 may comprise a central horizontal tongue 31, Fig. 8, mounted between two blocks of resilient material, which may have internal cavities 34a, 34b; the outer faces of the blocks are connected to the chassis frame 24. In all cases the resilient material may be bonded to the metal supports. Specifications 590,006, 600,203, [both in Group XXVII], and 603,642, [Group XXXII] are referred to.
