Abstract
In degassing liquids by contact with solid bodies, bodies of small size are held in suspension in an ascending current of the liquid to be degassed. The solid bodies may comprise grains of different sizes, the liquid being first contacted with the largest grains and subsequently with grains of gradually smaller size. The temperature is preferably between the boiling temperature of the liquid and the temperature at which the liquid is to be subsequently treated and may be gradually increased as the degassing progresses. As shown, liquid to be degassed enters a spherical container heated at the bottom through an immersed pipe and passes up through a suspended granular or pulverulent material such as ground limestone or brick, or iron shavings. Gas escapes from the top of the vessel, while liquid is discharged through a lateral outlet pipe. Alternatively, liquid is introduced at the bottom of a cylindrical, conical, or cylindroconical column containing the degassing material and surrounded by a beating jacket. Degassed liquid from the top of the column or after subsequent operations may be heated and used as the heating liquid and independent beating may also be used. In both modifications, the grains may be arranged so that the liquid passes over particles of decreasing size which are restrained from loss by the use of receptacles in the shape of inverted cones. In another modification, a part of the degassed liquid may be recirculated or any other liquid added to the ingoing liquid. The degassing of boiler feed-water is referred to, in which lime is used to eliminate dissolved carbon dioxide and the precipitated calcium carbonate grains used as the degassing material.
