Abstract

602,417. Rolling sheathed conductors. PYROTENAX, Ltd., and LEWIS, J. G. Oct. 15, 1945, No. 26959. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] A metal-sheathed electric conductor is made by feeding a conductor and insulation through a mandrel and a metal sheath over the mandrel and swaging the sheath. The conductor C<SP>1</SP> and insulation C<SP>2</SP> are fed within a hollowtapered mandrel A and a thick metal sheath is fed over the mandrel. Geared rolls B with tapered grooves are reciprocated by a crosshead B<SP>4</SP> to swage the sheath on to the conductor and insulator. During the idle travel of the rolls B the composite cable is pushed or pulled along the mandrel and the rolls and cable relatively rotated by a gear D<SP>2</SP> . The mechanism may be arranged vertically and a hydraulically-actuated rammer used for tamping powdered insulation and feeding the conductor forward. The sheathed conductor may be further extended in length and decreased in diameter.
