Abstract

601,296. Stuffing-box substitutes. CHANE PACKING, Ltd., and WILKINSON, F. C. W. Nov. 24, 1945, No. 31739. [Class 122 (v)] In a sealing device of the kind operating between rotating and non-rotating members, e.g. a shaft 8 and member 7 and comprising a stationary ring 9 rubbing against a collar 10 of the shaft 8, the rubbing ring 9 is preloaded by at least one pair of dished centrally-apertured inherently-resilient discs 1, the two discs of each pair having their hollow sides in opposed relation and their circumferential edges 2, 3 in abutment. A rubber bellows 5 completes the seal. In a modification, the discs are flexibly, but not rigidly secured together at their abutting edges by rubber bands, and in a further modification, fibre or fabric washers may be interposed between the discs of each pair and between the adjacent discs of neighbouring pairs.
