Abstract

Butadiene hydrocarbons are polymerized alone or with vinyl compounds in aqueous media in the presence of an oxidizing catalyst and catalytic concentrations of a compound of the formula <FORM:0599741/IV/1> , where Ar represents an aryl radical. Specific examples of these compounds are dibenzoyl, di-o(m, p)-toluyl and di-alpha(beta)-naphthoyl sulphides. Suitable copolymerizable compounds include styrene, acrylonitrile, methyl vinyl ketone and methyl methacrylate. Polymerization is carried out in the presence of an aqueous solution of sodium oleate using potassium persulphate as oxidizing catalyst and coagulation of the latex is effected by aluminium sulphate or sodium chloride and sulphuric acid.
