Abstract

599,226. Gas-blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and ROWLAND, F. G. Sept. 28, 1945, No. 25280. [Class 38(v)] The isolator switch 15, 16 of a gas-blast circuit-breaker is opened in response to pressure of blast gas discharged from the arcing chamber. When the circuit-breaker is opened, compressed air from a reservoir 4 flows through a valve 5, between contacts 1, 2 into an exhaust chamber 7 where it is trapped as in Specification 571,118, the chamber 7 having only small leakage ports 18 to atmosphere. The pressure in the chamber 7 is communicated by a pipe 8 and filter 10 to a cylinder 11 and operates the isolator through a piston 12 and a torque insulator 14. In an alternative construction the cylinder 11 is at the potential of the isolator switch arm and a hollow insulator connects it directly with the chamber 7. A diaphragm-operated relay energising a motor may replace the gas motor 11, 12. The blast valve 5 may alternatively be located in the pipe 8 the leakage ports 18 being omitted. The Provisional Specification refers to a diaphragm operating a control valve for the isolator and also to the incorporation of the invention in a circuit-breaker constructed in accordance with Specification 582,599.
