599,170. Cutting or perforating machines. CONNOLLY, F. J., and BARRETT, J. E. Sept. 14, 1945, No. 23734. [Classes 31 (i) and 31 (ii)] In a machine for cutting or perforating sheet material, the support for the material comprises a surface formed of numerous points such as are provided by wire card clothing or wire-brush cloth, and the cutting edge or perforating teeth or pins readily pass between the wire points after penetration. A plate element e is overlaid with a wire card which may comprise a fabric foundation f fixed to the place as by adhesive, and upstanding wires g which collectively form. a support for sheet material. A rotary cylinder a is formed with an axial groove in which is fixed a holder b fitted with a cutting blade c, which may have a serrated cutting edge, or with a line or perforating pins. At the moment of deepest penetration, the surface of the holder b rests on or close to the supporting surface, the cylinder a being rotated and the plate e moved correspondingly. In a modification, the plate e may be replaced by a second rotary cylinder. Cutting blades can be used which are fixed to the cylinder a either axially or circumferentially, or perforating pins can be arranged in any way on the surface of the cylinder.
