Abstract
598,640. Valve generating and amplifying circuits. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Sept. 21, 1945, No. 24509. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1944. [Class 40 (v)] An oscillating or amplifying circuit comprises a grounded grid electron discharge device, the grid having an annular terminal and being mounted the common conductor of a pair of coaxial resonators, the inner conof which are connected to the anode and cathode, and in which feedback is provided by means of a coaxial line with means for providing separate adjustment for the phase and amplitude of the feedback. The Figure shows an oscillator or amplifier comprising a grounded grid valve 2, with a tuned coaxial anode-grid resonator circuit 9 and a tuned coaxial cathodegrid resonator circuit 8. Energy is fed back from the anode grid circuit 9 to the cathode grid circuit 8 via transmission lines 15, 16 and 17. In each case, the two outer conductors and the two inner conductors are slidably connected in known manner so that the point from which output is taken may be adjusted. Probe 20, which may be capacitively coupled to inner conductor 11 of anode grid circuit 9, supplies energy to phase line 15 which is preferably a non-resonant line of length exceeding one wavelength and which may be terminated by an impedance matching resistance. Probe 24 supplies energy to amplitude line 16 which consists of a resonant line which is an odd number of quarter-wavelengths long. Probe 27 supplies energy to connecting line 17 which feeds energy via probe 29 to the cathode grid circuit. The phase of the energy fed back may be adjusted between 0 degree and 360 degrees by moving line 16 along phase line 15. Since a standing wave exists along line 16, the amplitude of the energy fed back may be adjusted by movement of line 17 and probe 27 along line 16. Line 15 and line 17 may be adjusted along resonators 9 and 8 respectively to provide maximum output. Anode grid circuit 9 and cathode-grid circuit 8 may be tuned by means of slidable plungers 13 and 12 respectively and amplitude line 16 may also be tuned by means of plunger 25. The energy fed back may be arranged to be in a positive direction in the case of an oscillator, and in a negative direction in the case of an amplifier. The input of the circuit when used as an amplifier may be applied to the cathode-grid circuit in any known manner.
