Abstract
598,280. Resilient mountings; frictional damping; disc springs. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24089. Convention date, March 2. [Class 108 (iii) ] [Also in Group XX] An anti-oscillation mount for optical instruments and other objects comprises, as shown in Fig. 4, an inner part 16 and outer part 18, 19, interconnected for limited oscillatory movement relatively to each other, a mass of soft resilient, yet form-retaining, material interposed between the parts for holding them in pre-determined spaced relation while permitting the oscillatory movement, a support fast to one part. for sup- .porting the mount, a support fast to the other part for supporting the object on the mount, an opening in the outer part for accommodating the support of the inner part with sufficient clearance to permit the oscillatory movement, and damping means carried by the support of the inner part for frictional engagement with the other part for damping the oscillatory movement. For supporting a pair of binoculars B, as shown in Fig. 2, a support 4, which carries the binoculars by means of a bracket 6, is provided at its lower end with a spherical member 16, Fig. 4, which is surrounded in spaced relation by an outer member in the form of a spherical shell comprising upper and lower flanged members 18, 19 ; these members are secured by screws 24 to the upper edges of a cup-shaped housing 1 supported by a pedestal 2. Interposed between the ball 16 and shell members 18, 19 are two soft rubber rings 26, 27, and the damping means comprises: a disc spring 29, which is slotted as shown in Fig. 5, to provide spring fingers 32, and is seated on a collar 33 above the spherical member 16 so as to press a layer 36 of felt against the inner surface of the upper shell 18. ' The upright 4 may have an attached collar 41, which is provided with a depending skirt 43 having enlarged openings 44 for engaging with some play the heads of the screws 24. In a modification shown m Fig. 6, rubber 58 is interposed between the ball 57 and the two-part shell 53, 54, and supporting arms 64 on the upright 50 carry two or more brake shoes 62, which are pressed by springs 63 into engagement with the outer surfaces of the upper shell member 58, if desired, the arms 64 may carry cylindrical guides fitting around the shoes 62, and the springs 63 may be adjustable to vary the frictional resistance. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, an annular brake shoe 78 is mounted within the skirt portion 76 of a collar 74 on the upright 72 and is pressed by three compression springs 83 into engagement with the surface of the upper shell member 66; the springs 83 are mounted in recesses in the collar 74, and the brake pressure may be adjusted through the medium of a ring 81 which is screw-threaded on the collar 74. The brake shoe 78 is prevented from rotating by means of three leaf springs 84, which are connected between the shoe 78 and the lower face of the collar 74. The ball member 64 on the upright may be knurled in order to provide for better engagement with the rubber members 71, and a pin 73 depending from the ball projects through an opening in the lower shell member 67. If desired, the rubber members 71 may be recessed peripherally to facilitate flexing them into position, or they may be replaced by a layer of rubber which is vulcanized to the ball. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the pedestal 2 carries at its lower end a circular plate 8 which is disposed in a casing 3 in spaced relation to the upper and lower plates thereof, with the interposition of soft rubber members 9, 11.
