Abstract
597,023. Glass manufacture. CORNING GLASS WORKS. Aug. 28, 1945, Nos. 22134, 22135 and 22136. Convention dates, Oct. 11, 1944, Jan. 23, 1945, and Jan. 23, 1945. [Class 56] Glasses having a low power factor and other characteristics making them suitable as an insulating medium for conductors carrying radio frequency currents, consist essentially of SiO2, Na2O, K2O and Li2O and also consist of either (a) not over 60 per cent PbO or (b) between 10-50 per cent BaO or (c) between 10-60 per cent of both PbO and BaO, the ratio K2O/Na2O being between 4/1 and 1.5/1, the ratio K2O +Na2O/Li2O being between 19/1 and 4/1, the SiO2 being not over 65 per cent when both PbO and BaO are present, not over 50 per cent when BaO is absent and between 40-60 per cent when PbO is absent, the total alkali metal oxides being not less than 5 per cent when PbO is present and not less than 10 per cent when PbO is absent, and Al2O3 being not over 1 per cent. Such glasses have a power factor less than .0006, a dielectric constant greater than 7 and a softening temperature less than 600‹ C. Many examples of each type of glass are given including batches containing alkali fluoride and those useful as an iron-sealing glass in the manufacture of glass-to-metal seals. The following compositions illustrate the three types of glass Specification 596,995 is referred to.
