Abstract

596,732. Electrotype. PRINTING & ALLIED TRADES RESEARCH ASSOCIATION, BANKS, W. H., and UPTON, P. B. Aug. 1, 1945, No. 19796. [Class 100 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXVI] Material, such as a wax or plastic mould for producing electro-type plates, having a surface not readily wetted by aqueous solutions, is subjected to treatment by a wetting agent and a solution of a metallic salt in order to enable a layer of conducting material such as silver to be subsequently deposited by chemical means, so as to form a basis for the electrodeposition of metal. The wetting agent is preferably the sodium salt of an alkylated naphthalene sulphonate. The wetting agent is preferably added to the salt solution, which may be acidified with hydrochloric acid. The salt may be stannous chloride or a salt of another metal such as iron, aluminium, chromium, or zinc. After the " wetting " process, the surface is washed, treated with a solution of silver nitrate containing one or more colloidal agents such as gelatin, then immediately, without washing, with a reducing agent the choice of which is governed by the rate of reduction required, washed, and finally treated in an electrolytic depositing bath. The reducing agent may be an aqueous solution containing 0.8 per cent. pyrogallol. Treatment with the silver solution and the reducing agent may be repeated.
