Abstract
596,332. Valve seats. SULZER FRERES SOC. ANON. May 4, 1945, No. 11369. Convention date, May 5, 1944. [Class 135] A valve insert comprises a seat ring 7 of nitriaed or case-hardened steel welded to a supporting ring 6 of an easily-weldable steel, and is welded at 11 to the valve casing. To avoid distortion of the seat surface 7<1> when the insert is welded to the casing, the wall thickness of the ring 6 is made less than the width of the seating surface, and the mean axial length of the insert is greater than one-third, but less than the whole of the internal diameter. In the form shown in the left side of the Figure, the insert is placed in position through an opening in a cover flange 2, whereas in the form shown in the right side of the Figure, the insert is introduced through the flow passageway 4<1>. In a modification, as applied to a hinged check valve, the seat surface is formed by a layer of material resistant to heat and friction deposited directly, by welding, on the supporting ring. A similar surface may also be formed on the valve member.
