Abstract
A small proportion of a blue-fluorescent compound which is a derivative of di-aminobenzoylamino-stilbene sulphonic acid formed by the substitution of one of the hydrogen atoms in each of the -NH2 radicals attached to the terminal rings by an organic radical which does not contain an -NH2 radical directly attached to an aromatic nucleus and which would not itself render the substituted compound unstable to light and oxygen, and which compound does not of itself possess any tinctorial properties, is incorporated in white textile materials such as yarns or fabrics or articles made therefrom by immersing or rinsing the material in a very dilute aqueous solution of the compound. Advantageously, the aqueous solution contains not more than 0.05 per cent of the compound and suitably between 0.01 per cent and 0.0001 per cent calculated on the weight of the textile material. Specified compounds are the following: 4 : 41-di-p-benzoyl-aminobenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid, 4 : 4 - di - p - acetylaminobenzoylamino - stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid, and the corresponding m- or o-compounds or salts of these acids; 4 : 41 - di - p - methylaminobenzoylamino - stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid Na salt thereof; 4 : 41-di - p - ureidobenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid or a salt thereof. In examples: (1) a new white cotton cloth is rinsed for a few minutes in an aqueous bath containing 0.005 per cent of the sodium salt of 4 : 41-di-p-acetylaminobenzoylamino-stilbene-2 : 21-disulphonic acid; (2) a batch of towels, table cloths, pillowcases and napkins weighing 7 lbs. is washed with soap normally, rinsed twice in clean water and finally rinsed in 7 gallons water containing 0.005 per cent (calculated on the water) of the compound used in (1); (3) white cotton yarn is treated in an aqueous bath containing 0.1 per cent of the sodium salt of 4 : 41-di-p-benzoylaminobenzoylamino - stilbene - 2 : 21 - disulphonic acid and 20 per cent of Glauber's salt.
