Abstract
595,903. Shaft couplings. AVIATION DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., TROTMAN, W. J., SPRINGATE, M. S., and MEWSE, C. July 21, 1945, No. 18757. [Class 80(ii)] In a disengageable torque transmitting shaft coupling, one shaft 3 carries a jaw member 9 engaging a tongue 7 on the other shaft 5, the coupling being engaged and disengaged by bringing the shafts into and out of alignment by means of a hinge 17 on the shaft 5. The shaft 5 carries a spring pressed sliding sleeve 10, the outer end of which slides over the outside of jaw 9, and holds it and the tongue 7 in engagement, a tapered mouth 16 of the sleeve 10 pressing inwards two balls 14, supported loosely in radial bores 13 of the jaw 9, to engage in recesses 15 formed in the flat faces of the tongue 7, thus locking the shafts against axial displacement.
