Abstract
595,773. Axle structures. BUGATTI, E. April 19, 1945, No. 9853. Convention date, July 15, 1943. [Class 79 (iv)] A steering axle for a motor vehicle comprises a middle section to each end of which is secured a generally straight lathe-turned member formed with a boss or fork for housing a king pin. Fig. 1 shows a centre tubular portion 1 bent to the required shape and which is preferably a seamless tube. A tubular end member 2 is secured to each end of the centre portion, said connection being made by brazing, welding, riveting or the like. Member 2 is preferably a forging, and is provided at its end with a boss 4 and means for attaching a road spring. The member after machining contains a bore 5 and a bore 2 for receiving the axle centre portion 2. Means for securing the road spring may consist of a hole 6 into which the spring is wedged by keys, or the spring may be secured in the conventional manner by U-bolts 11 holding the spring 12 on to pads 9, Fig. 5.
