Abstract

595,516. Refuse collecting vehicles. SCAMMELL LORRIES, Ltd., HUGH, P. G., and WATTS, L. D. July 5, 1945, No. 17185. [Class 108 (i) ] A refuse collecting vehicle is provided with hydraulic cylinders and rams for tipping the body located in a space between the forward end of the tipping body and a cab on the vehicle frame; the loading receptacle being interconnected with the body and the vehicle frame by flexible cables, so that the loading receptacle will be automatically displaced to uncover the discharge opening when the body is tipped to discharge its contents. A tractor-trailer vehicle is shown of the kind described in Specification 467,479 comprising a collecting body 1 hinged at its rear end to the trailer frame 2 and carrying a hinged loading receptacle 7 normally covering the opening in the body through which the refuse is 'discharged. The receptacle 7 is provided with a travelling scoop for distributing the refuse in the body 1. The hydraulic cylinders 26 for tipping the body 1 are located in the space between the forward end of the body and an attendants cab 20 at the front of the trailer portion of the vehicle. The ends of cables 16 are attached to the trailer frame at 19, and to the outer ends of horizontal arms 9 pivoted on the hinges for the receptacle 7. Rods 11 carrying adjustable nuts 12 engageable with abutments 13 on the receptacle are attached to the outer ends of the arms 9, and cables 14 connect the members 9 with catches 15 which engage the rim of the body 1 when the receptacle 7 is in the closed position. The tilting rams 26 are supplied with pressure liquid by an engine-driven pump 30, from a reservoir 31 on the tractor. The initial tilting movement tensions the cables 16 to release the catches 15, and the nuts 12 then engage the abutments 13 on the receptacle 7 so that the latter is swung from the body 1 as the latter tilts more steeply, thus uncovering the discharge opening at the rear of the body. A return spring enclosed in a cover 40 assists retraction of the body.
