Abstract

595,390. Power hammers. GREEN, N. D., and DEMOLITION & CONSTRUCTION CO., Ltd. June 27, 1945, No. 16401. [Class 83 (iv)] In a single acting drop hammer adapted to rest on the end of a pile and wherein the hammer block is raised by electrically driven means and at a desired point on its upward travel is disconnected from the raising arrangement so as to fall on the pile, the raising arrangement comprises an endless chain carrying a member which co-operates with a trippable lever catch device on the hammer block to raise the block. A casing 39 containing an electric motor 4 and belt driving mechanism for sprockets 15 is normally supported on a pile 40 by vertical rods 3 connected at the bottom by a horizontal rod 29 passing through a groove in the bottom of the hammer block 2. The hammer block 2 is slidable along the rods 3 at the lower end of each of which is a sprocket 17. A chain 16 passes around the sprockets 15 and 17, being driven by the latter from the motor 4. On each side of the block 2 is a pivoted lever 20, one end of which has a bridge piece 23 which normally rests on a roller on the end of an elbow lever 25 pivoted at 27. The other end of the lever 25 engages one end of a pivoted lever 28a. In operation, a projection 18 on the chain 16 engages one end of the lever 20 and thereby raises the hammer block. If the lever 28a is now rotated by a pull on a depending cord 28b, the elbow lever 25 is rotated against the action of a spring to move the roller so that the lever 20 is no longer supported and rotates, thus allowing the hammer to fall. Springs then return the levers to the position shown and the hammer is ready to be lifted by another projection on the chain 16. If the cord 28b is not pulled, the hammer is raised until the lever 28a engages a stop lever 32 carried by the casing 39. The apparatus may be hoisted into position by a chain 37 and be supported and guided by members 35 as shown. In the drawings, the trip mechanism is shown at one side of the block only.
