Abstract

593,282. Exhaust silencers. MAXIM SILENCER CO. June 7, 1945, No. 14414. Convention date,. Dec. 14, 1944. [Class 7 (ii)] Entrance loss of a gas conducting conduit in a silencer is decreased by a smooth annular member or collar 19 on the opposite side of the wall from the entering gas. The end of the conduit may be slightly tapered or have a filling 33 to form a smooth junction. when the annular member is welded thereto. As applied to a silencer of the tvpe having a chamber 10 divided by a partition, 13, the conduits 17 and outlet 18 are fitted with annular collars 19, 20. The collars may be solid or formed of piping and may have a circular or s'lightly elliptical cross section of a diameter between 1/5 and 1/20 that of the conduit. When applied to an annular conduit the diameter of the cross section of the collar is K#4S/# where K may vary from 1/5 to 1/20 and S is the cross-sectioned area of the annular conduit. On large silencers the collar may be made from flexible metal hose.
