[Class 145 (i)] In a rotary cutter for wood-dressing or other machines comprising a cutter shaft 1 with a cutter disc 4 on a mount 3 movable to different angular positions relative to the shaft 1 by an adjusting member 17 displaceable axially, the mount has a diametral arm 13 which passes through a transverse slot 12 in the shaft 1. Washers 11 and a nut 10 hold the disc 4 on the mount 3 which is pivoted to the shaft at 5. The adjusting member 17 has a forked end holding a pin 18 which engages an inclined slot 15 in the arm 13 so that axial movement of the member 17 effects rotation of the arm 13. The end of the shaft 1 is screw-threaded to receive a tubular member 20 which is connected to a sleeve 25 by ball-bearings 23, 24 in such a way as to prevent relative axial movement between the member 20 and the sleeve 25. The upper end of the member 20 is screw-threaded to receive a controlling device 27 which is connected through ball-bearings 28 to the end of a shank 19 attached to the member 17 and passing through the member 20. Thus relative rotation of the device 27 and the sleeve 25 effects axial movement of the adjusting member 17 and these parts 25, 27 need not rotate with the shaft 1 so that adjustment can be made whilst the cutter is operating. A clamping sleeve 29 having resilient tongues is adapted to fit over the device 27 to prevent undesired relative rotation of the device 27 and the sleeve 25.
