Abstract

592,730. Crank shafts. HEMPHILL CO. May 29, 1945, No. 13438. Convention date, June 9, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A crank shaft comprises two sections 2, 4, each having a crank arm 1, 3 rigidly attached thereto. The crank arms have spherical bearing recesses 5, 6 in which is seated a corresponding bearing ball 7, having a bore 16 and to which is secured the connecting rod 14. A screw 8 passing through the crank arms and the ball to secure the assembly together has a diameter appreciably less than that of the bore, to allow slight misalignment of the connecting rod. The shafts 2, 4 may be axially adjusted by means of collars 12, 13 on shaft 4, shaft 2 being axially slidable in a bearing 9. Further recesses at the bottom of the spherical bearing surfaces in the arms 1, 3 facilitate adjustment and provide a cavity for lubricant.
