Abstract
591,772. Paper filling for compound structures. MAY, G. May 25, 1944, Nos. 10187/44 and 12802/45. [Glasses 96 and 140] A cellular filling for structural elements is made by applying to a sheet of paper or film lines or rows of dots of adhesive, e.g. glue, superimposing a number of such sheets with the adhesive lines alternately staggered, cutting the pile at right angles to the adhesive lines and opening it up to form a lattice. The lines are inclined and in short sections if the walls of the lattice are to be pyramidal. The adhesive is applied by means of flat hinged screen 22 of silk associated with a stencil 23, a squeegee being used to press the adhesive through the stencil and the silk. The stencil may be dispensed with by coating with a varnish resist to leave a series of parallel lines through which the adhesive can pass. The paper may be supported on a board 15 capable of lateral movement of an amount equal to half the pitch of the adhesive lines and is moved for each successive sheet of paper. The lid 21 carrying the screen is hinged to a transom 20 which is movable vertically on pins or like guides. Alternatively, there may be two hinged screens and stencils for treating alternate sheets, or the outer lines deposited by the screen may be nearer one edge than the other and each alternate sheet is reversed. A printing machine or platen may also be used to apply the adhesive to the sheets. The setting of the adhesive may be hastened by heat and/or pressure, the pile being cut into narrow widths either before or after opening out into the lattice. Dipping in a solution or suspension of an artificial resin or cellulose ester strengthens the lattice which can also be metallised as by dipping or spraying with a varnish containing finely divided metal powder, e.g. aluminium. The cellular filling is cemented between boards of plywood, fibre board, plastic woods or paper. The peripheral edges of the structure may be filled with plastic wood or a thermoplastic material. The inner surface may be built up on a mould or mandrel by sticking two or three layers of paper together, using a chemical setting adhesive such as ureaformaldehyde resin, casein or starch, rubbing down and applying the cellular filling thereto with its cellular walls at right angles to the inner skin to which it is secured by adhesive. Specifications 27931/03, [Class 73], 6424/04, [Class 96], 120,701, 157,432, [both in Class 140], 492,630, [Group V], 501,172, 519,061, 538,306, 556,620, [all in Group XXIII], and 3178/40, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, are referred to.
