Abstract
591,743. Self-sealing pipe couplings. THOMAS, P. E., and STERLING INDUSTRIES, Ltd. May 14, 1945, No. 12077. [Class 99 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX]. A self-sealing pipe coupling whose ends are automatically sealed and unsealed when the coupling is respectively unconnected and connected has a fixedvalve 6, supported by a spider 7 and surrounded by a resilient bellows 4 in the high pressure side of the joint, which engages and depresses a mobile valve part 25 thus allowing a free passage of fluid through the coupling. The bellows 4 is attached at one end 4a to the member A and at its other end to the metal sealing ring 10, a spring 12 being added to assist the seating of the ring 10 on the flange 6a when the coupling is disconnected. The valve seat 20 is gripped between the members 16 and 19 which are held together by the shoulder 17 of the screwed plug 18 which screws into the member 19 and is centralized by the member 21 which also supports the spring 24 used for returning the mobile valve to its position substantially flush with the end of the component B when the coupling is disconnected. The valve seat metal rings are faced with a slightly yielding refractory material bonded to said rings by a thin outer layer of softer metal applied by spraying or electro deposition. For ease of assembly the member A may be made of two parts but the join of these parts must be external to the pressure fluid path in the coupled and uncoupled position. The nut C is locked by the circlet on the body B.
