Abstract
591,504. Explosives. TAYLOR, J., GURTON, O. A., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 17, 1945, No. 1394. [Class 9 (ii)] Low power safety blasting detonating explosives comprise : at least substantially 30 per cent by weight of ammonium nitrate, a self-explosive sensitizer, at least substantially 10 per cent by weight of a non-deliquescent ammonium salt containing no oxygen or insufficient oxygen to oxidise completely its ammonium radicle, and an insoluble metal carbonate in amount at least sufficient theoretically for the metathetical transformation of the non-deliquescent ammonium salt into ammonium carbonate and a salt of the metal. The ingredients specified are : as non- deliquescent oxidisable ammonium salts : ammonium sulphate, phosphate and chloride ; as insoluble metal carbonates : any natural or artificial carbonate of calcium, magnesium, barium or iron, e.g. limestone fines, chalk, dolomite fines, siderite fines and marble fines ; and as self-explosive sensitizers: liquid nitric ester-nitrocellulose jelly, and pentaerythritol tetranitrate. Other ingredients may include flame-quenching or cooling ingredients other than an insoluble metal carbonate, and acid or non-alkaline mixtures of buffer salts, e.g. sodium or ammonium di-hydrogen phosphate, or a mixture of one or more alkali metal dihydrogen orthophosphates and one or more di-alkali metal orthophosphates in such proportions as to give neutral mixtures of these salts. Further ingredients include a quantity of fibrous or bulky material, e.g. asbestos. The essential ingredients, with or without a buffer salt, may be intimately associated in the form of granules.
