Abstract

591,374. Preventing formation of ice on aircraft surfaces. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd., ANDERSON, J., and FIELD, E. F. May 5,1945,No.11464. [Class 4] Means for supplying de-icing liquid to an aircraft surface 11 comprises two superposed layers 1, 2 of absorbent material, such as fabric, the external superficial areas of the layers being sealed and their edges 5 unsealed and the layers being united along each of two zones 3 by at least one row of threads of resilient material, such as rubber, to form a conduit 4 for the de-icing liquid parallel to the edges 5. The upper surface of layer 1 and the undersurface of the layer 2 are rubberized or coated with rubber, thus confining the liquid to the conduit 4 and permitting its escape only through the yielding sides of the conduit and the unsealed edges 5. The resilient threads allow separation of the layers along the sides of the conduit and prevent too great a pressure rise with increase in viscosity of the liquid at low temperatures. The rubber threads are passed round the weft threads of the fabric and may be provided. with a cotton covering to prevent chafing. The layers may be connected by an interlacing of the constituent threads of the fabric between the zones 3 and the unsealed edges 5. According to the Provisional Specification, the resilient threads may be made of nylon, silk or " Lastex " (Registered Trade Mark). Specification 552,439 is referred to.
