Abstract
591,336. Flanging. KELLER, P. B., and BOLTE, F. B. May 29, 1945, No. 13482. Convention date, May 24, 1944. [Class 83 (iv)] Apparatus for dimpling sheet metal comprises a die element having a countersink with a flat bottom, formed by a separate member yieldingly mounted in the die member and a second die having a frusto-conical 'head to co-operate with the countersink. A die element 7 with an upper countersink 28 has a hollow interior within which is mounted a member 9 having an upper cylindrical portion 20, the top face of which forms the bottom of the counter sink. The member is pressed upwards by a resilient pad 10 and from the portion 20 a pilot mandrel 22 projects upwardly into a bore 23 in the dimpling punch 24 and naintains the punch and die in alignment. The punch is frusto-conical with a flat annular tip surrounding the bore 23. Both punch and die have projecting members 25 and 15 for engagement with the actuating members of the punch. In a modified form, the pilot mandrel depends from the punch into a bore in the member 9. The dimple is completed by drilling out the portion 39 containing the annular flat portion formed by the punch.
